2 mL 1 mL (Fluids), 5 mm3 (Tissues),

Specimen Stability

Special Handling

Transport refrigerated. They may be stored in the refrigerator at 2 to 8°C, up to 2 days before being tested. If longer storage is required, the spciemns will be frozen at -70°C or lower (e.g. on dry ice).

Causes for Rejection

Sputum, which contains large amounts of mucous; Non-ocular swabs for culture will requied medical director approval; calcium alginate swabs, cotton swabs; and wooden-shafted swabs; any specimens collected in fixative or preservative other than VTM approved by the virology laboratory.

Department

Virology

Standard Run Time(s)

Daily. Positives are reported when virus is first detected. This is dependent on the amount and type of virus present in the specimen.

Turnaround Time

ROUTINE STAT
