ß2 transferrin is the desialylated form of transferrin that is present in large proportion in CSF and perilymph. The presence of ß2 transferrin is nasal or ear secretions is indicative of CSF leakage. Prompt diagnosis and localization facilitates appropriate decisions and decreases the risk of meningitis.

- If submitting a syringe, remove needle. Add cap to end of syringe.
- Although results may be obtainable on specimens with less volume, reliable results are best obtained with an adequate specimen volume.
Inpatient: Deliver STAT to the laboratory at refrigerated temperature (2-8°C).
Outpatient: Freeze immediately and transport frozen.
